"the reflection of light"
For unit 2, I have decided to pick reflection as my project, this is because when I saw Daido Moriyama's reflection and refraction work, I thought it was quite interesting because his images are really unique and the tones are dark, its like its always at night when his taking the photos. I have always looked at Lee Friedlander, as his images are more based on city life and thats so much more easier for me do in London. I chose reflection because I think it's going to be really interesting because I can do all sorts of thing with it like phone camera, DSLR camera, film camera, and photoshop.

Naoya Hatakeyama
Naoya Hatakeyamas's style in his "River Series Shadows" is really in focus as the wave of the water is making the background really hard to see. The images are based on how the water is covering the background of the city and the its really colourful because of the light in the background and I think it might be the traffic light or the night light reflected from the water. I am really interested in how he did this and I want to know how to do something like this. The first image is my favourite out of this set. The whole image is blurred and the image is also upside down. This makes the image more questionable, e.g; What is reflected to make the image it is right now? Why is it upside down?

Lee Friedlander
This image is really messy, its a reflection from the window of a car. I think its really clean but messy at the time because the reflection of the person is really clean and however the image of itself is really dirty maybe of the window being dirty. I can do something like for different types of mirrors like clean, coloured and dirty. I can also take images of self portrait reflected from different reflective surfaces (car mirrors, glasses, water) around my local area.

Evaluation
This is my first set of images on reflection. In my images, I mostly used a mirror to show my reflection and I took self portrait of reflection just like an image of Daido Moriyama. I was more comfortable with doing this project because I had an idea of what I was going to do.
WWW: I focused on the theme I'm doing. I think some of my images are good, for example the ones with another mirror because my face look distorted and I look like I have half of a face.
EBI: I can develop this by taking images inspired by an artist that I researched on. For example I can take images of my reflection in the city with a lot of buildings that can reflect because of the windows. Perhaps I could use photoshop to make more reflections.

I chose to develop this image by layering it and forming my own reflection using layers. I think it went really well as I was trying to focus on multiplying the amount of mirrors there is, so it maximum the reflections there is in the image. I did this on photoshop. I have one image as a background, then I used the same image however I flipped it and made it 50% opacity so you can see 2 images. I repeated this process a few times however I need to make sure I'm not using too many images. WWW: I think I haven't over used the amount of images I used to make this look really reflected. EBI: I can try using different methods to developing this, for example; by rotating the images or even using different images. |

Evaluation
For this set of images, I tried to use mirrors in different areas and reflected different part of my or peoples bodies. I think this set of images are good however it could be better if the images are arranged properly, for example; I could of have the person and the visual image in the image because it would make more sense to the viewer on whats going on within the image. Again I focused on my theme. I tried to take images like Lee Friedlander which I think it was not too bad however half of my images are really blurry because the mirror was dirty. Next time I should clean the mirror and make sure I focus properly.

Evaluation
I think this set images are really refined because I know what I was doing. I wanted to achieve a set of images which were reflecting surfaces but also adding a little bit of distortion to the images too. I chose to choose surfaces which were other than mirrors and glass because it would look really good when I develop the images on photoshop. My idea is to layer several of these reflective surfaces on top of each other to see what this would look likeI think if I can focused the camera probably it would make the images much better as it wouldn't be blurred.

These are second final piece. I did this by laying images on top of each other on photoshop. I think the images are really good as it looks like multiple of reflections on one image. The first image is a few mirrors placed on the wall and the laid images of reflective surfaces that I took on it so it looks more like reflections. The second image was me trying to make a from reflection from the window however I don't feel like it turned out really well because it the lighting is too different and the images are not laid properly. The images are more abstract than naturalistic because it has a lot of different reflections and reflective surfaces. The third image took a while because I had to use 4 different images and placed then

In this set of images, I tried to take images of reflections through different materials. I used glass bottles, a metal plate and a mirror. At first I only used the glass bottle and metal plate and it turned out not bad as you can only see a reflected surface. As I wanted to create distorted images I started to use more glass bottles and I added a mirror so it would have more reflective surfaces. It turned out really nice because theres a lot of distorted frames in the images because of the reflections. I experimented more when I took the images in black and white, when I took the photos of black and white there was a red part in the image and I thought it was really cool. Overall I think this set of images is really good because I kind of distorted the images which is what I wanted to do. Next time I am going to take more of these image but closed up and have more different type of materials.

Evaluation
In this set of images, I have improved from taking images from the previous set of images as I did more closed up images. The process was the same as before but this time I used lights to shine on the reflections to make them brighter and have a brighter contrast and tone. The things that I done well was that I managed to make all the images clear and reflective and some images are distorted in a way as I put water inside the glass jars so that makes the images more distorted and it makes the images more questionable. This time I used more mirrors and more glass jars because it make the images more interesting and unclear in some sort of way. Next time I should make sure that I don't include the reflection of the background.
Artist Research: Andre Kertesz
Andre Kertesz is an Hungarian photographer who focuses on distortion, still life and street photography. His most famous work is 'Distortion no. 129'. Most of the images in it is distorted images of naked men or women. However, I find the images of glasses and the reflection in them more interesting. This is because he and I do similar things and I want to develop it into something like Kertesz would do. So everything that he does I want to do it but change it.
The images are reflections from the window however the images are flipped around and he adds some object in the glass. |
This is image, theres a reflection from the window however the view is flipped around and it has some object in it. If you looked at the image first you would be confused as the reflection is upside down. This image is of reflection from a glass from the view of the city however the image is reflection and it has a plant in the glass of water. I would think that the image is more abstracted because it doesn't look like its realistic as its upside down. The thing that seems the same to to me is that he is also using water in a cup however the thing that seem new to me is that the image is really abstracted and the reflections is really odd as its upside down. The thing that interest me about this image is how he took the image, for example; is it double exposure or developed on something else. The reflection in the glass surprised me the most as its upside down and it makes the audience think how it is done. I would named this reverted reflection because of the reflection in the glass. The thing that is effective with this image is that its really focused on the glass and you can see the reflections really clearly however if the background wasn't blurred out it would of made image look better as it will show the view and how its flipped upside down.

Final piece 1
Photoshop edit
Heres my first final piece. The images are reflections with layers of images on top of each other and its at different levels of opacity. I enjoyed developing and making this as my final piece because it was really fun exploring with different settings on Adobe's Photoshop. The first 2 images is an images of me taking a photo of myself with a lot of mirrors or distort myself within 2 mirrors. Then I layered the images on top of each other and rotating and flipping the images and again I changed the opacity. Changing the opacity makes the images more interesting as it makes the image have more reflections which is what I wanted to do. I think the out come of the first image came out really well however the second image didn't work really well in my opinion because the image is really boring and it's really plain. However, I really like how the person in the image has 4 different tones of himself. I also like the colour of the first 2 images because it makes the images look more natural. Next for the second image I should choose a photo that has more details and more interesting. The first and second images are really refined because the images looks so detailed and reflective. However, I think I have over done the 2nd image because it has too much images layered on top of each other and it looks too abstracted. I think the 1st image is the best one out of the set because it's not too much and theres enough details for you to see the reflection in the image so I think that looks really nice. At first I had a lot more layers on top of it. However, I deleted half of the images that I originally layered on top but now its much better now.

My initial idea for this unit was to use lots of mirrors to reflect the objects that I would put in different ways to show the reflection. However, I didn't have a lot of mirrors to use and I couldn't find any. I then took images of reflections of myself in with different reflective things. So then I decided to use photoshop to edit and develop my images. I researched on Naoya Hatakeyama because his river series shadow has inspired many people and I was one of them. However, I didn't do anything inspired by him because I wanted to stick to my idea. Then I researched on Lee Friedlander. My work is really similar to his as we are both taking images of reflection on different surfaces. Then I researched Andre Kertesz because I got bored of my original idea so I started to use glass and mirrors to get reflections.
For my experiments, I started taking images with a DSLR camera. I would take images of reflection from any reflective surfaces. My first experiment was reflections of self-portrait and I thought it was pretty good. Then I developed the images on photoshop by choosing one of my favourite images and then layering it top of each other. For my next experiment, I used another mirror and placing them in different ways and taking images of it, I think the images are not really good because the images were too plain and it didn't look good. After that experiment, I took images of reflective surfaces for example; windows, metals etc. Then I developed the images by doing the same process. For one of the developed image, it took a bit longer because the image had a cross in the middle so I decided to put 4 images on the cross and then did the same thing to the image. Then I experimented on takings images of glasses and different type of bottles. I did this by using a mirror and metal plate. I did the experiment twice and then I developed it on photoshop.
